Our History

The history of Hoffman Construction Company is rooted in the vision and determination of our founder, Peter J. Hoffman, and his wife, Anna. In 1915, while farming in Jackson County, Wisconsin, they recognized the need for a change.

Anna exclaimed, “Pete, we’re gonna go hungry on this sand farm growing hops! You’re a great horseman. Let’s move to town and start a drayage line.” And so, they did.

Pete began hauling coal and freight from the Black River Falls railroad depot to homes and businesses while Anna diligently managed the company’s financial side. As time passed, the operation expanded, and with the completion of western railroad projects, Pete and Anna added a few mule teams from St. Paul, MN, to their fleet of horses.

When the demand for road construction emerged, those with the horse and mule teams took on the work. As years went on Pete ventured into road projects by himself in the twenties.

Tragically, Pete lost his life in 1927 at the Black River Falls railroad depot. His son, Duane Hoffman, returned from college and assumed business leadership and incorporated the business with his mother, Anna, as the first president of Hoffman Construction. Under Duane’s conservative management, the company persevered through the challenges of the Great Depression and World War II, positioning itself for growth in the era of interstate highways. Duane’s two sons, Peter and David Hoffman, joined the company, carrying on the family legacy and contributing to its expansion.

Over the years, Hoffman Construction Company experienced remarkable growth. From generating $25 million in revenue in 1984, we have steadily grown to surpass $200 million today. We manage 30-50 major highway and site development projects annually, leveraging our extensive fleet of state-of-the-art equipment, including scrapers, dozers, off-road trucks, excavators, and dump trucks.
