Landfills are typically constructed in engineered cells designed to protect groundwater and ensure long-term performance. Each cell begins with a compacted clay liner placed over the native soil base and positioned at least three feet above the water table. A leachate collection system is installed above the clay liner, followed by a geosynthetic liner to stabilize waste. A graded permeable sand or gravel layer is then added to promote proper drainage and direct liquids into the leachate collection system.
