Hoffman Construction Company announces the launch of “Protect the Zone,” a new driver-safety initiative aimed at reducing distracted and reckless driving through highway and roadway work zones.
Every road project Hoffman Construction builds runs directly alongside live traffic, putting crews within feet of passing vehicles for months at a time. “Protect the Zone” is designed to remind drivers that the cones, signs, and flaggers they see are protecting real people, and that slowing down, staying alert, and putting the phone away can prevent a life-altering crash.
“The SAFETY of the folks building our roads and using our roads is paramount in the construction of projects,” said Chris Goss, President of Hoffman Construction. “We do many things within our work zones to keep people safe, but the one thing we can’t control is the traveling public. With this program, we are hoping to create awareness and remind the public that everyone within these work zones deserves to go home to their families.”
The campaign launches with a bumper sticker, “Lives Are on the Line: Slow Down in Work Zones,” that Hoffman is distributing on its fleet vehicles, at job sites, and through community partners. The bumper sticker is the first piece of what the company intends to build into an ongoing platform, with future “Protect the Zone” items planned to reinforce specific driver behaviors, such as staying alert and putting phones down before entering work zones.
Work zone crashes remain a serious and persistent safety issue on U.S. roads, and construction crews are especially vulnerable to distracted, speeding, and inattentive drivers passing through active job sites.
According to preliminary data from the University of Wisconsin Traffic Operations and Safety Lab, there have been more than 1,700 crashes, 621 injuries, and at least eight deaths in work zone crashes in 2026.
