THE ROLE OF HOBBIES IN WORK-LIFE BALANCE

Hello Hoffman Team,

Hobbies aren’t just fun; they’re a powerful way to enhance well-being and enrich life.

Pursuing special interests can reduce stress, boost creativity, and help you build enjoyment and fulfillment outside of work.

If you’ve been curious about trying something new but aren’t sure where to begin, follow the tips listed here.

Why Hobbies Matter

HOW TO DISCOVER THE RIGHT HOBBY FOR YOU

Start small and be consistent

You don’t need to spend hours on a hobby every day. Short, regular time devoted to a hobby can help reduce stress and improve focus. The key is enjoyment and consistency, not perfection.

Try different activities

Sampling a variety of hobbies helps you learn what truly resonates with you. Some activities may help you relax and others might energize you, but both are valuable.

Reflect on what sparks your interest

Think about activities you’ve wanted to try or things that used to bring you joy. These could include creative pursuits like painting, physical hobbies like hiking, or social interests like joining a club.

Schedule hobby time

You don’t need to spend hours on a hobby every day. Short, regular time devoted to a hobby can help reduce stress and improve focus. The key is enjoyment and consistency, not perfection.

Notice the benefits

Over time, hobbies can boost creativity, reduce anxiety, and increase your sense of fulfillment outside of work.
If balancing work and personal life feels overwhelming, your Employee Assistance Program (EAP) offers confidential support and resources to help you explore stress-management strategies and meaningful ways to care for your well-being.

Weekend Night Closure

HCC crews worked throughout the night and weekend to keep traffic moving during a major full-road closure on Highway 12 in Wayzata, Minnesota.

More than 30 HCC employees, along with multiple subcontractors, worked around the clock to complete challenging storm sewer installations, barrier and pavement removals, overhead sign removals, guardrail and fence removals, and bituminous paving operations.

During the May 1–3 closure, crews successfully installed five concrete storm sewer crossings and replaced 12 storm structures before paving operations were completed. Thanks to the dedication and coordination of everyone involved, the project was completed safely and reopened to traffic ahead of the 5:00 a.m. Monday deadline.

Project Updates

West Allis, WI

Progress continues on the West Allis project as HCC crews and subcontractors work to safely and efficiently advance construction throughout the corridor.

To improve safety and streamline operations, traffic staging was combined to allow multiple phases of work to move forward simultaneously.

Current operations have focused on storm sewer installation beneath the I-894 bridge, pavement removals, and underground utility work. Crews are also coordinating with Zenitech on upcoming milling and overlay operations for the I-894 ramps, which are scheduled to reopen by August 1 ahead of the Wisconsin State Fair. As work continues into June, crews will keep advancing storm sewer installation while progressing construction toward Lincoln Avenue.

Big Bend, WI

The I-43 Rock Freeway – Big Bend project continues to make strong progress as Troy Prochaska’s team successfully completed Stage 1 and crossover construction ahead of Memorial Day.

As work moves into June, traffic will shift into Stage 2, allowing crews to begin topsoil stripping, pavement removals, and deep culvert installation throughout the northbound work zone.

By early November, the project is expected to include approximately 8 miles of pavement removals, grading, crushing, and aggregate placement along the I-43 mainline.

WTBA Highlights Hoffman’s Cranberry Interchange Project

The WTBA newsletter recently highlighted Hoffman Construction’s work on the Cranberry Interchange project, one of Wisconsin’s first major Design-Build projects. Working alongside SRF Consulting, AECOM, American Engineering & Testing, and Sheet Piling Services, the team helped develop innovative construction solutions that improved safety, reduced traffic impacts, and saved over an acre of wetlands. By using the Design-Build approach, the project team also cut nearly 300 calendar days from the schedule while maintaining high-quality construction standards.

State and industry leaders toured the project this spring to recognize the collaboration, innovation, and efficiency taking place on site.

Mortenson Safety Week

Hoffman Construction was proud to participate in Construction Safety Week alongside project partners and on-site crews.

The week focused on promoting awareness, education, and teamwork through presentations led by HCC’s Kevin K. and Travis G. on equipment operator blind spots and jobsite safety. Crews also had the opportunity to experience equipment simulators and static displays designed to highlight the importance of staying alert around active work zones. The event concluded with the HCC management and safety teams serving lunch to more than 1,000 workers on site in appreciation of everyone’s commitment to building safely every day.

WISDOT Work Zone Safety event

On May 28, the Wisconsin State Patrol Air Support Unit conducted a traffic enforcement detail within the I-94 work zone near Eau Claire to promote safe driving habits and increase awareness of work zone safety. This two-and-a-half-hour event highlighted the importance of slowing down, staying alert, and following posted traffic controls to help protect construction workers.

Enforcement Results:

  • 21 total traffic stops
  • Average speed of 79 mph among speeding violations
  • 13 drivers stopped for traveling 15–19 mph over the speed limit
  • 8 drivers stopped for traveling 20–24 mph over the speed limit
  • Highest recorded speed: 83.7 mph
  • Additional stops included following too closely and unsafe lane changes.
