SUPPORTING MENTAL HEALTH AT WORK

Mental health affects how we think, feel, and cope with daily challenges. When it’s strong, we have the energy to do our jobs well, maintain relationships, and navigate life’s ups and downs. When it suffers, so does our ability to focus, stay productive, and enjoy work. Globally, depression and anxiety contribute to the loss of 12 billion working days every year. That’s why fostering a supportive work culture is important to us at Hoffman; it benefits individuals, teams, and the company as a whole.

Protecting Your Mental Health
There are many small steps we can take to support our well-being. Consider these ten practical approaches:

  • Talk about your feelings – Opening up helps ease pressure. Whether it’s with a trusted coworker, manager, or someone outside of work, sharing what’s on your mind can lighten the load.
  • Stay active – Regular movement doesn’t have to mean the gym; even walking, stretching, or physical hobbies can lift your mood, improve sleep, and boost focus.
  • Eat well – A balanced diet supports both body and mind. Try to eat regularly and stay hydrated during the day.
  • Drink sensibly – Alcohol may feel like stress relief in the moment, but it often worsens anxiety or low mood. Moderation makes a big difference.
  • Nurture relationships – Supportive teams are essential for good mental health. Make time to connect with coworkers, friends, and family, even when life gets busy.
  • Ask for help – Nobody has to go it alone. Resources like Hoffman’s Employee Assistance Program and HR are confidential and here to help.
  • Take breaks and rest – Short pauses, vacation days, and proper sleep all allow your mind to recharge. Even a few minutes away from your desk can make a difference.
  • Do what you enjoy – Engaging in hobbies or tasks you’re good at boosts confidence and reduces stress. Balance challenging projects with things you know you can excel at.
  • Accept who you are – Everyone has unique strengths. Confidence comes from valuing what you do well, while not dwelling on comparisons with others.
  • Care for others – Checking in on colleagues or offering encouragement strengthens relationships and creates a supportive workplace for all.

Supporting Colleagues
It’s not always easy to talk about mental health, but a small gesture can mean a lot. Asking someone how they’re doing in a warm, genuine way shows care. Find the right time and place, give them your full attention, and listen actively. You don’t need to have all the answers; sometimes just being there is enough.
Active listening is powerful: maintain comfortable eye contact, use open body language, and acknowledge what’s being said. Ask thoughtful questions, but don’t push for details they’re not ready to share. End conversations by recapping what you’ve discussed and following through on any support you’ve offered.

Creating a Healthy Workplace
At Hoffman, we believe a safe and supportive environment is a fundamental right. It reduces stress, minimizes conflicts, and helps everyone perform at their best. Supporting mental health isn’t just about preventing problems. It’s about helping each other thrive, both at work and in life.

Together, we can build a culture where well-being is a priority, conversations are encouraged, and every team member feels valued!

Celebrating Baily Coenen

Hoffman Construction is proud to celebrate Bailey Coenen, named IUOELocal 139’s 2024 Apprentice of the Year. Bailey’s drive, work ethic, and dedication to learning have made her a standout member of our team.

Her skills as a heavy equipment operator not only earned this honor but also helped her join the Wisconsin Army National Guard as a fully qualified 12N Horizontal Construction Engineer through the Army’s Civilian Acquired Skills Program (ACASP).

We’re proud to have Bailey representing Hoffman on the job and in service. Congratulations, Bailey, on this well- deserved recognition.

Mental Health Resources

Taking care of your mental health means knowing where to turn when you need help.

To make it easier, we’ve created a Linktree with important mental health resources and support numbers.  Please talk to your supervisor to get the QR code containing these important numbers.

Greetings HCC Family

While traveling across Iowa this past July, I took part in an event known as RAGBRAI — 406 miles, 10,861 feet of elevation, all in just 7 days on my bicycle.

Unfortunately, I did have a reportable incident with a bike crash, but thanks to my PPE, I was spared from serious injuries.

There were plenty of highlights along the way. Thousands of friendly Iowa cyclists made every day enjoyable, including a memorable encounter with David Robinson (The Admiral), former NBA Spurs player, who struck up a conversation and even wanted to try my partner’s bike! At 7’1″, you can imagine what kind of challenge a bike fit might be for him.

And on the very last day, I had the great privilege of being greeted by HCC’s own Ambassador to Iowa, Ray Mahr, in Guttenberg, IA. It was the perfect reminder of the strong friendships that keep us all connected.
