HCC Apprentice Spotlight: Melanie Gallardo Paving a New Path Through Apprenticeship

August 6, 2025
From repetitive warehouse work to operating heavy machinery on a Hoffman jobsite, Melanie Gallardo’s story is one of bold choices, personal growth, and discovering a career she truly loves.

Melanie recently completed the 2025 Building Strong Communities (BSC) program, a 12-week apprenticeship preparatory course that offers participants an in-depth overview of the construction industry, craft-specific curriculum, and hands-on exposure to various trades. The program is designed to help women, individuals from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, and veterans build lasting careers in the construction industry.

While enrolled, Melanie also participated in a four-week Apprenticeship Readiness Training through the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 49, where she focused on her chosen craft: heavy equipment operation. Reflecting on her decision, she explained, “I wanted something fun that wasn’t indoors. I liked heavy equipment.”

That interest led Melanie to her first hands-on role in the field—operating a roller as part of the Hoffman team on the Chaska project. With the support of BSC and IUOE Local 49, she developed her technical skills and found a sense of belonging and purpose on the job. “It’s like brotherhood, sisterhood — people who’ve got your back,” she shared.

Today, Melanie is a first-year registered apprentice, gaining valuable experience and building a career she’s proud of. “I came out of this knowing I was going to be something,” she said. “I am proud of how far I’ve come and where I’m going.”

To those feeling stuck or unsure about their future, Melanie offers this advice:

“There is so much more to the trades. Just try it. You never know what you’ll discover.”

We’re proud to support programs like Building Strong Communities and grateful to have been part of Melanie’s journey.
Her story reminds us that the path forward can lead to something truly meaningful with the right support and willingness to take that first step.
